Class Descriptions

Intro to Yoga
Intended for new students or those seeking a refresher, this class introduces basic asanas, Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations), the Morning Series and the Tibetan Rites. Intro to Yoga sets a safe foundation upon which to grow a Yoga practice while preparing students for Level 1 classes.

Level 1
Level 1 is for students who have attended an Intro to Yoga series or already have at least a 2-month foundation of alignment-based asana experience.  Focus is on strengthening the body with standing poses; gentle backbends, twists, forward bends and foundations of inversions are also practiced.

Level 1 - 2

This class is for students who have attended a Level 1 class for at least six months, but are unsure about stepping into a Level 2 class.  Focus is on creating greater confidence in the practice, learning Sanskrit names for poses and practicing the series (see Level 2 description) by heart.  This is a great class for easing into a Level 2 practice.

Level 2

Level 2 is for students who have practiced alignment-based Yoga for at least six months.  Asanas from Level 1 are refined and held longer; deeper backbends and inversions are practiced regularly.  Level 2 students practice the Morning Series, Surya Namaskar and the Tibetan Rites from memory.

Gentle
The Gentle class is designed for students interested in a slower, but equally effective, practice to loosen and strengthen muscles while calming the body and mind.  This is the class for times of high stress or low energy, giving you an opportunity to safely build strength, mobility and balance – even if you’re healing from injury or illness.  No yoga experience required.

Prenatal
Prenatal yoga is the ideal practice for maintaining health, strength, flexibility and peace of mind during pregnancy. This class is designed to help women develop tools to make pregnancy more comfortable and joyful while preparing them for the experience of labor, giving birth and becoming mothers.  Particular emphasis is placed on strengthening the pelvic floor.  No yoga experience is required.  You can start any time, though we highly recommended resting during the first trimester.

Mom & Baby (Postnatal)
Mom & Baby classes are a fun, safe, gentle way for new moms to reconnect with their bodies, minds and spirits in a supportive, baby-friendly environment. Focused on the unique needs of new moms, classes help women create balance, strength, flexibility and equanimity as they step into their new roles as mothers.  Particular emphasis is placed on gently regaining tone in the pelvic floor and core muscles.  No yoga experience is required.  You can start any time, though we highly recommended resting during the first 40 days postpartum.  Please bring your not-yet-crawling baby along!

Kids' Yoga (Special Summer Offering)

Come and join a fun series of four classes designed to create strength, balance for the body and focus for the mind.  Amy will cover basic poses through games, story telling and healthy snacks.  At the end of the series each child will receive a fun participation gift.  No yoga experience is required; please bring a yoga mat for your child to use.

Yoga for Pain Management (not currently offered)

This class is designed for people living with chronic pain.  Using yoga asanas, breathing techniques and meditation as a guide, you'll practice meeting the challenges and needs of each moment while embracing the joy and peace that is our birthright.  Just as in other classes, props and modifications will make the poses fit your body, so that you can be free to explore new positions - and new perspectives - safely and effectively.  No yoga experience required.  Please, if necessary, check with your doctor before joining this class and contact Kelly with any questions.

Restorative Yoga (held once or twice per month - see schedule)

In this special class we use props to fully support the body so that students can completely relax.  This relaxation leads to a profound release of tension - physical, mental and emotional.  You will leave feeling refreshed and ready for a good night's sleep.  No yoga experience required.

Transformative Spirituality (Purna Yoga Meditation)

Transformative Spirituality techniques provide you with tools for clearing your mind, harnessing your creative power, opening further the home of your spirit in the body - the heart center - and surrounding yourself with the loving presence of your spark of Divine Light.  This method of meditating is particularly focused on opening the heart center, making it appropriate for people from all walks of life and all faith backgrounds.  Please make a commitment to yourself to try at least four classes (and practice at home!), so that you can truly feel the difference that meditation makes.  For seasoned practitioners, the on-going class offers a wonderful way to support the circle, while deepening your attunement to your heart center.

Previous experience is not required.  If you already own a bolster or meditation cushion, please bring it.  If not, you may borrow one of the studio's.  Pre-registration is only necessary if you wish to take advantage of the 4- and 6-class discounts.

Note: Asana (Yoga postures), Pranayama (breath awareness and control), meditation and relaxation techniques are practiced in all classes.
